That’s what I do when I help my mom. I’ve had to connect to her machine at
least twice in the past month to help her with one thing or another. A little
over a month ago I had a conference call between my mom and my uncle (her
brother) and I was connected to both of their computers at the same time. They
both use a genealogy application and she wanted his saved information on one of
the familys. My uncle wasn’t sure what file to send her so I had to go
searching for it and then do a transfer from his machine to mine and then to my
mom’s machine. So much fun!

yes - I do tunnel vnc through ssh for work related stuff (my desktop cmpt in
the office is Ubuntu.)

I am going to try to help my mom this evening.

I am going to go with Teamviewer. I like their quick connect - I'll share a
link with her and have her read a string of numbers back to me...we will be on
the phone already anyhow...

a) Have a Linux desktop machine or server on your school LAN, that is reachable

b) ssh -XC to that box

c) Run whatever utility on the command line (vncviewer ip-address, etc.), and
the GUI pops up on your remote box.

Have a look at these:

www.crossloop.com

http://www.teamviewer.com/index.aspx

www.showmypc.com

I usually use logmein for remote access but I like showmypc for an easy
way to connect to someone. Teamviewer and Crossloop are similiar to
showmypc.

I tried to use a generic subject line, but I'm wondering what is
popular out there for remote assistance over the Internet these days?
Especially if I can use a Linux desktop and take a peek at a Win7
screen. I have some great tools for my LAN, but have not connected over
the 'net for a some time.

I want the other user to be logged in and watching me move their
mouse...
