There's no great answer to this dilemma. If you honestly need all day use, we've had success with the Dell Latitude E series laptops. We even bought the extended battery "slice" that connects to the bottom of the laptop. They end up being bulkier and heavier but they will run all day no question.

With spare batteries to allow a battery change during the day, they'd start charging the current battery in the laptop after school, but then someone needs to put the spare in 2-3 hrs later to charge it.
