The video quality is usually better/faster when going straight to VGA, rather than through USB to the PC. But, there are a lot of cool features that make the USB option nice.

    most of the document cameras will either use your existing vga
    cable, that the computer plugs into, or if their is a computer
    connected already can be usb connected to the computer. At least in
    the ones I've used, no additional cable to the projector was needed.
