Here is what is happening with your sendto: and why. I mailed a service request from your link with my email client open. The mail went through just fine. I closed my email client and tried again. This time, the email client had to be opened with my email username and password before mail was sent. This is by design.
In order for a web page to use a mailto:, there needs to be a valid sending account. Without a valid account, spammers could take that service request and hammer us with denial of service or other maliciousness. So, what to do? Your current process is just too complicated for 90% of your staff. They just want things to work. I am not sure why you want to publish a private (school only) tech-support link on a public web site. Why not just create a 'techsupp...@windsor.k12.il.us' group and publish to your staff. Or, create a tech.wind...@windsor.k12.il.us<mailto:tech.wind...@windsor.k12.il.us> user that can be accessed and shared by the three people currently on the sendto: list? Open your Outlook client and look in Tools/Forms/Choose Form/Tasks. These are template forms that can be used for service requests. Again, about 2 too many steps for that 90%. I did a quick Google check and found dozens of html form creation tools. http://www.emailmeform.com/ http://www.123contactform.com/ http://www.web-source.net/html_email_form.htm http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-247-outlook-issue-with-html-form One of the biggest problems I see with web mailto: is spam generated by web bots using the mailto: to send crap. The solution to avoid this is to use an imbedded login and password along with a captcha spam blocker. http://www.formmail.com/captcha/ An advantage of using forms rather than just email addresses is the database that is created in the form creation process. Again, I am not sure of the difference between a list of email messages or database of the same messages. Another solution would be to 'bite the bullet' and install a real help desk solution. One that has been recommended to me is free for 1-2 techies. http://www.inet-sciences.com/ I have been considering adding this to my hosted line, but haven't had time to make it happen. A HelpDesk application will give you much more control and reporting... you will be able to create a knowledge base of past cases, inventory your equipment, etc. etc. Just a thought, Moodle has several helpdesk modules that could be dumped onto your moodle site. http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=155698 ______________ Sincerely, Ron Egolf, MCSE Network Analyst, Area IV LTC 217-893-1431 (O) 217-841-4311 (C) reg...@area4.k12.il.us From: tech-geeks-boun...@tech-geeks.org [mailto:tech-geeks-boun...@tech-geeks.org] On Behalf Of Bruce Brewer Sent: Tuesday, September 28, 2010 10:35 AM To: 'Tech-Geeks Mailing List' Subject: [tech-geeks] outlook issue I have a tech request link on my webpage, that when selected opens word as an editor. I want it to open directly into Outlook, as people select the link, fill the pre-addressed e-mail and think they sent it- when in fact they must open Outlook, put in the password and select send/receive. How can I make it not open into Word as en editor and open directly into Outlook I am using Outlook 2003 set up as Exchange Server accounts.
