It is site based and the exact amount is determined by student population. We pay between $308.75 and 356.25 per building per year. It is only good for the studios they represent, though. No TV programs and no Fox movies.
They (and similar agencies) offer single-use licenses as well, but typically if you show more than 3 per year, the annual license is the better way to go. It also covers "movie nights" and is based on the building so any organization using your building can legally show the movie. -TS From: tech-geeks-boun...@tech-geeks.org [mailto:tech-geeks-boun...@tech-geeks.org] On Behalf Of Russ Gowin Sent: Saturday, October 02, 2010 10:32 AM To: 'Tech-Geeks Mailing List' Subject: Re: [tech-geeks] Movie Licenses I know this topic is a few weeks old, but I was wondering how much a site license from movlic.com is going to cost? I too have a teacher who is showing movies from Netflix during class, but I'm not sure if they are class related or are just for reward. It is a Home-Ec class and one movie I know she was showing at one point was "The Rookie", so I don't know how that's related to cooking/sewing/etc. I have been reading a couple of articles on Netflix and according to their TOS: "Unless otherwise specified, our DVD rental service and the content on the Netflix website, including content viewed through our instant watching functionality, are for your personal and non-commercial use only and we grant you a limited license to access the Netflix website for that purpose. You may not download (other than through page caching necessary for personal use, or as otherwise expressly permitted by these Terms of Use), modify, copy, distribute, transmit, display, perform, reproduce, duplicate, publish, license, create derivative works from, or offer for sale any information contained on, or obtained from, the Netflix website, including but not limited to information contained within a member or members' Queue, without our express written consent." The articles and forums I read were these: http://copyright.butler.edu/a.php?qid=21886 http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/netflix_turns_a_blind_eye_to_illegal_use_by_school.php http://blog.librarylaw.com/librarylaw/2010/09/using-netflix-in-a-library.html I really don't like the fact that the teacher is using Netflix because I get enough complaints about our Internet connection being sluggish (we only have a T1 line), so if the teacher is doing something wrong then I need to inform our administration. It covers a great deal of movies. We also use this so we can do fundraisers as well. I have been looking at the laws and from what I can tell, if they are using the movie as part of directly teaching a subject, then you don't need a license (I assume this is what they mean by face-to-face). If you are just using the movie as a reward in the class, then you need one. I am sure my staff have shown things for reward purposes that were on VCR/DVD, but I always felt that it was up to them to worry about copyright laws since I am not involved. Now I am if I purposely unblock Netflix for this use. How many of you obtain an umbrella license from MPLC.org and how do they calculate the cost?
