1) Define "frequently".  If this occurs after "over night" or after "parked at the airport for a week" it could be different.
2) test the alternator for sufficient charging current
3) check the alternator belt to insure proper tension.  Insufficient tension will cause a drop in charging current
4) check the vehicle for a heavy drain while parked.  Use a current flow meter to see how much the car is drawing while "off".  You could have a small short in a wire somewhere, or something like the radio is staying powered up.
5) check the age of the battery.  If it is a liquid cell, it might be possible to refresh the acid, or have a shop "boil the plates" (a very old technique).

Voltage adds in series; current adds in parallel... so..

As for "D" cells or "C" cells... 8 in series makes 12 V.. No problem.  But, if these are 1AH, then to make the equivalent of a car battery - which could easily be hundreds of  AH.. you would need hundreds of "sets" of 8 batteries in parallel... I'm thinking that would be a LOT more expensive than a new car battery.

If the car is fine once started, and runs/stops/starts reliably during the day... then you can pick up a "spare" battery or one of the "jump start" batteries to keep in the trunk.  You can also get an automatic battery cut-off switch (check an RV dealer) that will basically disconnect the battery when it drains to a certain point.  You have to "hit the switch" and start the car to re-set it.  that way, whatever is draining it can't drain it past the point where it has enough power for a start.

Then again, it could just be that the battery is going bad.

Good luck!

I have a car related question. I frequently face the "dead battery" problem while starting the car. Repeatedly, I have to call up a friend to request for a jump start. Is it possible to have a easy solution? If I keep few 1.5 V batteries in series to make a full 12V, will it be useful? I know the amperage is a problem. How to solve it?
