I am able to see both the computer names in my network places in both the laptop and the PC, But When I try to access my PC my Lapto it gives ' \\PC is not accessible , you might not have permission to access this network resource " When I tried to access the laptop from my PC it asks for user id and the password. I havent set any administator password for both of the computers. What could be the problem that I am not able to access the files I have attached the screen shot of the error message that appears in my laptop. Can any one please tell me what could be the possible resolution for this Thanks

I would just like to add, you don't actually need to have the IPs
consecutive, they just can't be the same ip for multiple computers.

First of all you need a cross cable to connect your laptop n ur pc. It's
available from all the pc vendors. You can buy it easily.
Next step is connect the cable to your Lan sockets in your pc n laptop.
Then in start menu, you must be having My Network Places along with My
Documents n My Computer. If the shortcut is not there, then goto my computer,
on the left hand side of screen, there's options for "Other Places". In it
you'll find Control panel, Shared Documents, My Documetns n My Network Places
Go to My Network Places. Click on "View Network Connections", again an option
on the left hand side of screen as above.
Double Cilck on your Local Area Connection icon.
Click ON Properties. Click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Make sure not to
un-check it. Then click on "Properties"
You'll get further options. If the highlighted options is "Obtain an IP Adress
automatically", then select the option, Use the following IP Adress.
Then you'll have some fields to fill in.
fill the first line, i.e. IP Adress : 192.168.0.10
Second line, i.e. Subnet Mask will automatically get filled up by the numbers
255.255.255.0.
Enter the values of IP adress in Default Gateway too.
Same values u can fill in for Preferred DNS server.
Click on OK. Again you'll come to the window where u selected Internet Protocol
(TCP/IP).
On the top most area of the window, click on Advanced.
Click on settings of Firewall. Disable it if its enabled.
Follow the same procedure for your laptop Local Area Connection.
But the difference here will be the IP address value.
Here you should enter 192.168.0.11
or u can also enter 192.168.0.9
You can enter the value of your choice in the last field.
i.e. it can also be 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.0.117, etc..
Jus make sure that the last digit values should differ by one in your laptop n
pc.. i.e.
if laptop has ip address 192.168.0.3
then pc ip address should be 192.168.0.2 or 192.168.0.4
i.e. it should be consecutive. i'm sure you get my point now.
then disable windows firewall in both the pcs.
go to start menu. right click on my computer n select properties.
in the options on the top area of window, select Computer Name. Type any name
for your pc identification.Make sure the Workgroup optoin shows
Workgroup : MSHOME
if not click on Change button. select Workgroup n type MSHOME in it. Do the
same for both laptop n pc. make sure you name both differently to distinguish
them.
if you have any antispyware n antivirus installed, then make sure you exit
those applications.
Now all the procedure is done. Now go to My Network Places. On the left hand
side of the screen, there's an option View Workgroup Computers. Click on it.
It'll show mshome. double click it. it'll show both your pc n laptop with their
respective names you've entered. This should work in both the pc n the laptop.
Then you're ready for file sharing. Just follow this procedure n if you're pc n
laptop are getting interconnected, i.e. they both are getting detected in both
the machines, then let me know. I'll send the next tutorial on file sharing.
Till then, best of luck with it.....
