Benjamin, thank you very very much. I have not discovered that source. To all of you, that one suggestion has made my time all worth it. Even if we don't end up partnering, this discussion already paid big dividends. I agree that its worth the 1000, but don't you think that an IFS kit could use a minor detail such as DOCUMENTATION!!! They originally justified not documenting the FS interfaces to keep Novell away, and novell reverse engineered it. I have a better chance of writing a reliable driver by having novell do it. Now Novell is another story.. Theres a bunch of excellent engineers, cursed by years of poor management, until recently. They are also an example of what happens when a dictatorship (Ray Noorda) does not grow into a Democracy, with time and size. They shot themselves in the foot. They bought wordperfect because bill gates pissed off ray noorda, by playing the ego card. I watched the shoot themselves in their own foot. I almost want to give them a copy of MFS, just in return for all the excellent engineering white papers that allowed me to learn networking. I knew it could be done because NDS already did it. That's the technology that made me work on the file system for so long. If all goes as planned, Novell will be a major partner on this project. But first I'm going to try to recruit EMC. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of Benjamin Coates Sent: Sunday, May 13, 2001 8:56 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [freenet-tech] RE: I've designed a global file system, it will obsolete N... >===== Original Message From "Josh" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ===== >Mr. Needham, try developing a file system for Windows NT. > >You will see that the file system interfaces ARE NOT documented. >There is ONE book from O'reilly, dated 1997. >Microsoft has an "installable file system kit" that is the biggest piece of >shit I've ever seen. > >The ONLY way to do it, is to hire a company called OSR, who has REVERSE >ENGINEERED IT! > Or get the GPLed ifs kit at http://www.acc.umu.se/~bosse/ That, the vulture book and a working knowledge of NT kernel programming ought to be enough for anybody with the patience (this does not include me, at least until somebody wants to pay me to do it). The MS ifs version will get you sample drivers, too, which are probably worth the $1000 (last I checked) price. >I hate Microsoft.
