We're using F5 Big-IP units at my workplace. I can't say I'm enthused
with them compared to the Alteons we used to use, but I also won't go so
far as to say that's a failing of the LB hardware as the Big-IPs exist
in a different place, both in terms of network/firewall architecture and
organization politics than the Alteons did. For example, it's entirely
possible the most recent firmware fixes the technical issues we've
encountered...

Our main problem has been fail-over events causing load balanced apps to
go pear-shaped. Blackboard is a particularly bad one for it but we've
had some very odd problems in some circumstances such as intermittent
connectivity from the newly Active unit that went away when failed back
to the other unit (I haven't heard any explanation for that behavior yet.
