Just an unscientific data point;  but I have at least three production
servers with 3 disk raid1 layout in MD that have had no problems (other
than the crappy disks failing.)  I used this configuration because I 
knew I was setting out with crappy disks and a nvidia sata chipset 
that didn't support sata hot swap with the kernel I was using.  I mean,
I guess I could have left the disks in as hot spares, but eh,
I'm paying for the disk, so I might as well get the increased read
performance.  

I mean, there may be weird corner cases, but it worked fine with
me (using the 2.6.18 kernel that comes with xen 3.x)
