Yes - but since that referred to VMFS and I wasn't including
VMFS in the question, it didn't seem terribly pertinent.

To just examine the NFS model, I have these two options

    [ VM OS ] [ VM OS ]
    [ ] [ ]
    [ (fd)  ]       [  NFS  ]----> NAS Disk
    --------- ---------
    [ ESXi ] [ ESXi ]

    [ ] [ ]
    [ NFS ] [ ]
         \
          \
        NAS Disk

Then there is the equivalent configuration but read
"iSCSI" instead of "NFS".

The obvious initial take would be that the second option
would generally be better as drawn, but in reality the
VM OS would still do all it's networking through ESXi

I was given apocryphal tales of NFS being slower - 15%+
slower - than iSCSI, but I have no idea of the veracity
of the teller (so to speak). There is a lot of stuff out
there, but a fair amount of it is years old now; I'm
interested in the current "state of the art".
