Just as a possibly unrelated data point, I'll pass along a recent
experience with the Dell R410. This box has two on-board Broadcom NICs
and we added an Intel quad-port NIC sold by Dell. Under heavy traffic,
we found the Intel ports reported billions of errors in just a few
minutes and caused an NMI which killed the OS (Fedora). The error report
referred to a possibly strange power-saving mode. Under the same load,
the on-board NICs worked essentially flawlessly. Neither Intel nor
Dell could explain the problem. But we accidentally discovered that
disabling the BIOS parameter for memory interleaving also fixed the
problem. Still, Dell could not explain why. Strange interactions should
be expected if the combination hasn't been explicitly tested.
