I don't recall a lot of details beyond it being somewhat finicky about what macros could be used where and what could be nested in what whats, and a lot different from -ms, -me (which was the old AT&T version, not the enhanced BSD version), and the modern standard -mdoc / -mandoc. (We eventually migrated to LaTeX.)
