Windows has supported software raid for about as long as I remember (at
least servers) and it works, but it's got some drawbacks.  They're not quite
using the exact same disk format or something, so you couldn't, if you
wanted to, simply pull one of the disks and attach to another system and
expect to read its contents.  Or something like that.  Likewise, ghost-like
imaging utilities often are incompatible.

Most motherboards nowadays support mirroring.  All the dell laptops I've
bought in the last 2 years support raid mirroring, and half of them don't
even have two hard drive bays.

It's not impossible to go wrong.  But I think if you're just paying a little
attention, you can hardly go wrong.
