> How do you handle 'vacation'[1] coverage in a solo shop?

This is something I do currently, and I'm really very pleased with the
results:
Whenever possible, don't work solo. Hire yourself part-time, and hire a
part-time partner as well. The company gains redundancy in its employees,
and you gain redundancy in your employment. (You both get a part-time
somewhere else too.)

You get a partner to bounce ideas off of, and to discuss things with. A
second brain and a second pair of eyes is always good.

You cross-pollenate. Because what you learn and develop at your other
location, you will bring back and share here. And so will the other person.
You each become more effective individually than you otherwise were going to
be, and you gain redundancy as well. It's simply a big win in every way.

> [1] "vacation" sounds so much nicer than "hit by a bus", don't you think?

I prefer "hit the lottery or a bus." ;-)
