Does anyone have any tips on safely shipping large (i.e. 4U, 5U) servers
across the country when original packaging is unavailable? I realize this is
a bit plebeian, but I'm sure someone on this list has some meaningful advice
on it.
A soundly built wooden crate. Or at least a pallet. Just cardboard won't cut it
unless you really have a custom made box and properly shaped foam inserts and
all that fancy stuff like the big vendors have made (original packaging).
Back when I had to ship stuff to trade shows, I remember that the shippers who
specialized in such stuff would rent us some of the fancy metal/plastic/foam
equipment containers (you know, the kind the military is known for). I expect
some googling on "servers, shipping, containers, rental" would find you someone
who could provide such things. Or calling one of the outfits that sells such
cases might help you locate a source for rentals.
