There's also virtualbox. Ganeti can't manage Virtualbox VMs (though a plug-in could be written and I'd like to see someone do it). I use VB on my Linux desktop for certain experiments but I've never used the API nor have I benchmarked it. It has a GUI which is very nice.
The emulation of the 64-bit intel architecture is so good that you can run Xen in a linux VM running on VirtualBox. In fact, I use VB for demos. I create 3 VMs in VB, then I use Ganeti to turn those three machines into a cluster where each runs Xen and ganeti manages the VMs within.
