I have to add something to this thread:
Some bios allow you to disable the virtual extension (Intel VT, AMD-V), and some manufacturer disable it by default.

Make sure it's on, running a couple of KVMs on my thinkpad was taking it to its knees (and making it *very* hot) until I started looking into it and realised I was running full software emulation. Switch the bios setting, and now it's cruising!

Also, lscpu will tell you which kind of emulation your CPU(s) can do.
