I'd say that, depending on the value of the data that was lost, you might want to consider other options. There are some very reputable data recovery companies out there, and any "forensic" tools your relatives might use have a strong potential to make that recovery more difficult. *I* would advise just setting the drive aside, and contacting one of those companies (I've mentioned them before, but the name escapes me right at the moment).

Sure, there's plenty of tools out there, but they presuppose a certain skill level at discovery, and not every one wears all hats equally well.
