Something else to keep in mind, is that you should bit-copy the entire
disc and only do testing on the copy.  Use gnu ddrescue, dd_rescue, or
whatever.  But image the entire disk and then play with the image.

And it might simply explain where the data went, the divvy partion
structure got corrupted somehow.   Total gues though...
