If you really want to get into DIY, this looks like a fun place to start:
http://www.heartlandcomputers.com/chenbro-rm91250-black-extended-atx-ceb-rackmount-9u-chassis-with-1620w-psu/

It's just what it sounds like - an empty 9U rackmount chassis, with fifty drive
bays. Add your own motherboard, fifty SATA cables, giant octopus drive
controllers...

Or, if you hate fiddling with the cables, eRacks will sell you one
pre-assembled: http://eracks.com/products/storage-servers-nas/NAS50/

You could then install something like OpenFiler, and have a field day.

Subject: [lopsa-tech] What to use for 200TB of Dev/QA storage?

We have around 200TB of dev/QA storage that is across 3 SAN's. (EMC VMAX and
IBM XIV's)

Servers are AIX, Solaris and VMware.

We are looking to replace it with cheaper storage.

I would be interested in build-your-own-NAS solutions, but I am not sure what
to start looking at. (Netapp is too expensive)

Failing that, what does a cheap SAN look like?

We don't need SAN replication, or many fancy features.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Craig
