Craig> We have around 200TB of dev/QA storage that is across 3
Craig> SAN's. (EMC VMAX and IBM XIV's) Servers are AIX, Solaris and
Craig> VMware.

Is this NFS storage, or do you export LUNs to your servers? What are
you goals?

Craig> We are looking to replace it with cheaper storage.

What about performance? Backups?

Craig> I would be interested in build-your-own-NAS solutions, but I am
Craig> not sure what to start looking at. (Netapp is too expensive)

siliconmechanics and supermicro have build your own systems. Are you
looking for a single monolithis pool of storage, or can you spread it
out across systems like you currently have?

Craig> Failing that, what does a cheap SAN look like?

NexSAN has some interesting boxes. If you already have EMC and IBM
storage, I'm sure it will be much cheaper. But it might not fit your
needs which haven't been explained well.

Craig> We don't need SAN replication, or many fancy features.

I assume you do want reliability though? Nothing like have your
dev/QA people sit around wasting time/money because your cheap storage
failed.
