I don't know much about this yet, so I'm wondering if anyone already knows
more than me, or if I should just continue to post as I figure things out.

Office 2010 is available now. (At least, via Action Pack. I'm downloading
right now.)

The main reason I'm excited about this, is because I have the hope I can
create a supportable solution, along the lines of google docs. That is,
allow users to access docs, internally or across the WAN, securely (I
presume https) in their web browser, without any need to VPN. They (I
think) should be able to simply have access to their stuff anytime,
anywhere, from any computer, securely. (to the extent you trust the client
computer isn't infected with something bad.)

No need for VPN. No need for CIFS etc.

The only new server product I saw available for download was Sharepoint
2010. I am hesitant to go there, because I remember what a pain it was
before. Requiring the sharepoint server, the sql server, a week of expert
configuration time, a specialized backup solution, and requiring users to
*only* use IE, and *only* have files available through the web server.

I really want to simply grant a secure web-enabled access to files on our
existing CIFS server, so I can continue using the same old backup tools, and
snapshots (previous versions) but just *enable* access to those via https.

Anyone know more than me? Admittedly, I haven't done any work or research
yet.
