There are plenty of other ways to optimize a web site for large numbers of 
images, etc.   CDN's, pipelining, longer cacheing, direct sending of 
files,  alternate web servers for static content, or reverse proxies can 
help.


I'm not sure of your use case, but there's a ton of options to help.  60 
images on a home page is not inherently bad, but things can be made 
better, even without a redesign.  I'd still try to cut down on the images, 
if you can, but it's not always possible.
