you're right...i wrote my original mail without having any dictionaries
to hand. i cannot really think of ever having heard "above-mentioned",
but it's in the oxford style guide, right enough.

but then we would not get to use words like aforesaid and
aforementioned, both of which are much classier than "the thing i said
before" or "the stuff above".
