There was an aborted attempt to upgrade to binutils 2.17, aborted because it generated completely broken binaries on several platforms. There will probably be another run at it at some point, but it completely depends on when some developer feels sufficiently driven, annoyed, or maybe just masochistic, to attempt it. (Suggestions to switch to some other linker should be backed with evidence that it supports the platforms where OpenBSD currently uses binutils, or is on its way there. What would be the point of a half-assed change?) Philip Guenther
