There is no functional benefit from this, so if you think the risk outweighs the benefit I'm happy to drop it. My theory is just that we need to keep maintaining old code, even without benefit, so that someday we don't discover it's too far gone to make meaningful changes. (Not saying m4 is in that shape). I run m4 about once a century, but I can hang onto the diff until I find time to build some ports with it.
