I found one laptop of mine can reproduce this issue.
It's a thinkpad x130e with an AMD APU chipset, dmesg below.
This should be similar hardware as the daemonforums reporter is using
("AMD E350") http://daemonforums.org/showpost.php?p=55318&postcount=38
If I plug a USB hub into this laptop, no devices behind the hub do attach.
Not even mice, USB storage sticks, etc. I never noticed this issue before,
but it's probably not new. I never used a USB hub with this machine before.
My current guess is the Atheros device doesn't get sufficient juice to
power up properly for some reason.
