Hello everybody I know there are those on list who think that Gordon and I are very anti-Microsoft and anti-Windows. Actually that's not completely true; we recognise that there are advantages to the OS, just as there are disadvantages and advantages to Mac OS X.
Anyway, recently our little NetBook fell victim to the old Windows problems and it crashed; complaining about some sort of hardware change that had apparently been made by some invisible person. No; this wasn't a hacker attack. The change never even occurred; I know that because at the time its network was totally disabled. Anyway, after a lon time sitting on the shelf in broken mode, I eventually found the time to sit down with Gordon and look at the machine. We decided to do a little more digging; and went into the system BIOS, and turned off the Asus "Boot Booster" function. Then we rebooted the machine. The difference was startling. Instead of turning on the machine and being in Windows within about 10 seconds, the machine booted from a truly cold reset condition. This time, up popped the menu which was missing in Boot Booster mode, that of RollBAck RX professional. Once this menu appeared, it allowed me to "Roll Back" the machine to a time when Windows was fixed, and running well. In a matter of about 5 minutes, our system was rolled back and running perfectly again. RollBack RX available from <http://www.horizondatasys.com> (if memory serves) is one of the best Windows products on the market in the field of disaster recovery. I would go so far as to say that no machine should be without RollBAck if it runs Windows. It makes Microsoft's feeble System Restore look pathetic, because System Restore cannot correct pre-boot problems, as RollBAck can. If your boot config goes wrong and you only have System Restore for your defence, you could well be in for a long restore job. RollBack Pro RX is a product we've used for a very very long time, and we've recommended to others on this list and I know that at least one person is using it. Previously, Gordon tells me he had a product called "GoBAck" by Roxio. But Symantec bought that and promptly did away with it so that it wouldn't impede their sales of Norton Utilities. Long story; but in Windows XP SP2 and later, GoBAck would no longer function and so that was the end of that idea. But Rollback remains to this day as valuable a tool as it was 5 years ago when, apparently, Gordon started using it. Thanks to that software our NetBook was up and running again within about 5 minutes of being booted into the RollBack menu. Rollback does have a GUI which you can use within Windows as well. That's another nice thing about it. It's 100% accessible. The boot menu is actually quite easy for a blind person as well; you just hold down the Home key when your system boots. Then, if you want to restore your system, just cursor down once and press Enter. A list of restore points comes up; with the latest snapshot at the top of the list. Just cursor down to the one you want and hit enter and off you go. If you only have one baseline restore point, it will be marked as "Installation", and is the only one you cannot delete. But all you have to do to roll back to it is to cursor down once or twice and then hit enter. All in all, RollBAck RX Pro is well worth the money. It has saved my other half countless hours of re-installing over the years he's been using it.
