Making various parts of the handle of the cane vibrate sounds
like a very good idea. Your thumb is usually against the top of
the handle so if you felt a vibration there, it could mean
something just above your head like a tree branch or some sort
of overhang that might be trouble.

One would hope it would ignore ceilings and things that
were detectable but too far away to be in the way.

Yes, you've got to hear that traffic more than anything
else.

One day while walking home, there was construction on
the other side of the street from me. It was not any direct
concern to me but they were using a concrete saw or maybe a
concrete finisher or something similar. Those things sound like
a buzz saw and make a steady sound that owns the world right in
that area.

I was walking along a very busy street with the buzz saw
on the other side and thanking every deity whose name I could
conger up that I didn't have to cross any streets right there
because there was so much noise that I couldn't hear the cars
passing not 6 feet from where I was. I could tell, however, when
one passed because the sound of the machine would suddenly
decrease and not sound so near as a car went between me and the
machine, creating a sound shadow. There's no way you could hear
traffic at that point to cross safely. At least that noise
jamming only lasted a few days.
