I've heard reports that the Captain is not going to be made any longer. It
was the mobility unit of choice for Leader Dogs here in the U.S., but they
have posted that it will no longer be available. I don't know if that's a
universal thing or not.

Subject: GPS Hardware/Software
Hello everybody
I've been discussing this with one member of the group; but I decided I'd
throw it open to the group as a whole to see if anybody else has any
input. Gordon and I are looking into the possibility of getting him a GPS
navigation unit, now that he's doing mobility work again. One suggestion
is the "Captain GPS", which I believe the RNIB shop is selling. I seem to
remember somebody over here saying they have one and have had problems
with it. So is there any further comment? The primary unit we've been
considering is the Trekker Breeze which seems to be the most effective
product given what I've read. But that's probably a biassed viewpoint as
it was primarily on the Humanware website.
As I understand it, the Captain GPS is not only a GPS unit, but an FM
radio and an audio player to boot. I know this is going to sound odd; but
that actually puts us off it a little. I personally am coming around to
the opinion that something like the Trekker Breeze would be a better
option since it is a dedicated GPS navigation unit and, therefore, doesn't
have the gimmicks, bells and whistles that the competition boasts.
I'm just wondering whether they've compromised on GPS navigation functions
in order to bring out the bells and whistles. Also I am told that this
unit has speech recognition only, and no other method of input. Also, I'm
given to understand that it only recognises US English efficiently; as in
somebody who speaks with an American accent is always going to get the
best results. Since that doesn't include either myself or Gordon, it may
not work well.
But this is only hear-say, and I'm more than happy to listen to the
opposite viewpoint. Any input is very much appreciated.
Lynne
