From what you have said on list, this may not be all that helpful, but here
a link to the Sindero Group's web site and has a fair amount of info about
accessible gps solutions.

Hello David
I'm going to top post here as it will be quicker. To answer your last
question first: The reason we don't want to go the iPhone route is very
simple. We don't want Gordon walking down the street with his iPhone in his
hand. That's like an open invitation to muggers, "Come and rob me".
There's another reason as well though. Everybody who requires social
services in the UK is entitled to a "Personal Budget" to spend on services
or equipment each year. How much you get depends very much upon your social
worker's willingness to assist you. Gordon has been told that he will be
able to get coverage from them to buy the Trekker Breeze or something like
it. Based on what you've said below, I think we'll just forget about the
Captain GPS totally and look at getting him the Breeze.
The advantages with the Breeze over the iPhone-based solutions are that you
can programme a route, including buss stops and other landmarks, and have
the Breeze intuitively guide you to your destination. It wouldn't be
necessary to fiddle around with virtual keyboards as it would with the
iPhone. I'm sure you'll appreciate that these things are not idea for when
you're out and about and have a white cane in one hand.
There are other advantages too; so unless we find another solution that's
better all-round than the Breeze, that's the route I think we'll go, pardon
the pun.

• It was me who had extremely negative experiences of the Captain GPS.
The inclusion of the Radio mp3 player for me was nothing but a nuisance.
The volume of the radio was so low , I could not hear it but more
importantly the absurd voice recognition system would interpret commands you
gave it as requests for radio stations and would dump you out of GPS into
various obscure radio stations. Very annoying as you had to start the GPS
sequence of commands again.
The basic problem is that it relies on Voice Recognition and there is no
other way of inputting a destination. For me and my family it was hopeless
failing to recognise even simple street names like Wood Street. I am not
sure if we would have had more success if we had tried to mimic a US or
German accent as I believe the device is originally German. I have
aslighta slight lisps but have never had difficulty with other voice
recognition systems in the past like Dragon and Via Voice. It certainly does
not appear able to learn your voice.
At the time I was trying to use it the support web site was also
inaccessible to a screen reader for important connectivity functions.
Out of interest I was considering a purchase of an I-Phone , partly for GPS
functionality.
Why are you not considering GPS solutions on the I-Phone? I am interested as
I do not want to invest money in another solution which does not work.
