That makes me wonder if the USB device is fully
registering itself.
I've seen unix systems choke on these converters. The
device partly registers but no new serial ports show up and
that's what counts.
Usually, these things work okay on Windows systems and
choke on unix if they are going to choke at all, but all you
need is a dodgy driver on your Windows system that doesn't get
along with the USB device and you might get what you have now.
I bought a pair of USB dongles a couple of years ago and
they came with miniature CDROM's containing drivers for various
versions of Windows but the point is, here, that sometimes the
system tries to run the wrong driver or is running some generic
driver because it has nothing else better to go with.
In my case, I borrowed a dongle from a coworker and
tried it on a Linux system and found that it worked fine so I
bought two of them for myself. The CDROM's were for Windows and
not needed for the Linux system, but this is obviously an issue
if they supply one with drivers on a CD.
I am sorry I am not much more help, but driver issues
would be my first simi-educated guess.
