Hi Roger Absolutely! There will not be a problem I'm sure. Perhaps I should explain though why I requested that it be done that way. When you get a compressed file, if you need to integrate it into an existing audio item such as a technology programme, or if, for other reasons, the sample rate and compression type has to be changed, you have a bit of a problem with quality. Decompressing the file into wave format, for example, does not restore the file's original quality. Re-compressing an already tainted file at a different sample rate only makes things worse and the result is some often quite annoying artefacts such as pops and squeaks at higher frequencies and distortion at the lower end of the spectrum.
Lynne has examined a wave form which was produced in this way and she says she can see the clips and peaks in the waveform image so you can imagine how that would sound if it were re-compressed. Why is quality so important, one may ask. Well, the reason for that is quite simple really. Internet broadcasting technologies have improved out of sight over the last 5 years or so. Nowadays one can achieve almost CD quality at very reasonable sample rates. The equipment we use to listen to Internet radio and even watch Internet TV has also improved alongside the broadcasting technologies. Indeed, when I litem to a recording of an old radio show which I did way back in 2003, the difference is remarkable. Even though the sample rate was quite high, and that was matched by the sample rate of the recording, there are noticeable quality issues which do not seem to occur in current day Internet broadcasting. The better the quality, the more likely we are to be noticed by the liste ner and the rating of a station goes up accordingly in the Shoutcast or Icecast directories. Anyway I am babbling. I will await your audio sample with interest, and we would like to express again our gratitude. If you know of anybody else who would like a shot at doing their own thing, either live or pre-recorded, by all means let them know that we are here and we'd love to hear from them. They do not have to be an expert, they only have to be keen. Gordon On 31 Jan 2013, at 10:56, Roger Firman <[email protected]> wrote: Hi Gordon, Thanks for your message. I tended to think you would want a wave file and as good quality as I can do. I'm sure we will sort things out.
