Hi Roger

At your leisure, absolutely no pressure. Can you give me an example of your
genre? Are we talking technology, or other independent subject matter? Either
way is totally fine. Regarding the quality, There is, and probably always will
be, a limit above which we cannot go due to bandwidth constraints. We also
need to be aware of the constraints facing the listener. But, as broadband
gets better and better for the consumer, as the available throughput becomes
greater and greater, so the Internet broadcasting quality gets better in
parallel. Opinion seems to be divided regarding the best way to broadcast.
For example, the format we currently use is MP3 which reflects the audio format
of the broadcast and not the recorded material. As far as the recorded
material goes, you can use whatever you like, as long as you hit the DSP doing
the encoding with the proper format and sample rate. The Shoutcast directory
which is hosted by AOL still uses MP3 and many stations are liste
d on that directory. However, other hoisters of streaming services recommend
that you broadcast in AAC format and still claim to be able to have stations
listed in the Shoutcast directory. So, I need to look into the realities of
that. My point, however, is that we use FLAC as our chosen file format and
that gives us about as close to CD quality as you're going to get within a
stereo-dimensional system. If, on the other hand, the streaming was AAC then
the potential is greater for sharper quality. Indeed, we would have preferred
to broadcast our stream in AAC format but, unfortunately, the stream hosting
service we use does not support AAC in their cloud, nor do our players,
(especially our FLASH Player) support the AAC format. Therefore, having
weighed up the pro's and conns, we opted to go MP3 and use the technologies
which are not available on all services.

Many thanks indeed.

I guess it could be argued that quality internet radio might need to be
of even higher recording quality that more traditional broadcasting but
as you say, so many advances have been made during the last few years.

If all goes quiet for a bit it won't mean I'm not working on something.
