Hi all
Okay, i'm very pleased to be able to report to the group that I
am writing this message using my BrailleNote Apex. In orger to
do this, it was necessary to do a lot of thinking beforehand, and
then start digging around on the internet.
It occurred to me that some of the problems which i was
experiencing with my Apex may not actually be KeySoft problems at
all. Keysoft is actually just an overlaid interface which runs
on Microsoft Windows CE, just like any other piece of software.
Although the hardware is customised, in essentials it is just
like any small NetBook computer, with the obvious exceptions that
the keyboard has been changed (on the BT model at least), and
the monitor has been replaced by a Braille display and speech
synthesiser.
That's a very crude way of putting it, of course, but in
essence it is accurate. I could go into quite a lot of technical
detail regarding the Apex family of notetakers, but i don't want
to bore everybody to slees. So Í'll get back to the poit of my
post.
When I sat and thought about things for a while, it struçk me
that the problem my server was having with the Apex when I tried
to send mail was that the fully qualified hostname which Postfix
was looking for was not being presented. That was why I was not
able to log into the SMTP sthvice at all. Since KeySoft was not
able to accept a fully qualified hostname, i reasoned that it may
well be the actual operating system itself which was preventing
this.
Windows CE, just like its big brother which runs on desktop and
notebook computers, has its own database where all of the
settings which, in the case of the BearlNote family, control the
interface. Just like its big brother, Window Ce has what is
called a "Registry". This is where all of KeySoft's information
is stored.
Like Windows XP, 7 and 8, it is possible, with the correct
tools, to edit the registry, by passing the overlying interface,
in this case, KeySoft. So, I started doing some digging around
on the Internet, and I contacted a couple of people I know in the
software industry. Before long, the pieces of the jigsaw
started coming together, and I located a tool which IT
proffessionals use when working at a low level to edit the
Registry in Windows Ce.
Once I had access to the Registry itself, it did not take me
long to locate the reason why I was not able to authenticate
properly with my mail server. there is a key in the Registry
which, when edited via KeySoft, only permits 15 characters,
excluding non-alpha-ñumeric characters. However, when I manually
edited the key directlyb then logged into my client, I found that
I was perfectly able to authenticate myself the the mail server,
and, consequently, I am now able to use my own server with
KeySoft to send and receive mail in a secure environment.
Naturally, the developers of Keysoft are aware of this issue,
but they don't think it important enough to fix at the current
time, because they don't want, so they told me, to sacrifice
KeySoft and KeyMail's user-friendly interface.
To be totally honest, I am astounded by their attitude. I
understand why they want to maintain a user-friendly interface.
But to deliberately disable functionality like this merely
because they don't want to clutter up their environment has to be
the most crazy excuse I've ever come across for not fixing bugs.
All it took was a very simple edit, once I found the key, and it
fixed my problem. So, if anybody else on list who owns an Apex
wants to know exactly how I did this, by all means get back to me
off list. I should warn you though that it isn't for the
faint-hearted. Although it's just a simple change, one character
out of place could result in you having to reset your Apex to
factory defaults.
Kind regards
Gordon
