So, here's the situation. I'm not gonna go into the details on list
specifically, and if anyone on list does go into them, you'll automatically
be denied a future account. Basically, I recently had to take down a web
site I was hosting for reasons beyond my control. Well, ok, fine, they were
to my control in that I chose in my disgression to take the site down, but
that's neither here nor there. Bottom line is, the site went down. It's
not your concern why or how. Just know it did. Anyway, the point is, I
spoke with someone who will be completely under all circumstances left
anonymous, who really badly wants to take over the web site. for reasons I
don't wish to share publicly, this is not going to be an option, and his
request has been denied to some degree of level. I say to some degree
because of the reason I'm writing the list this morning.
Basically, here's the deal. When the site was running, it was being powered
by the very newest version of WordPress which was being hosted on a
CPanel/WHM server. What I'd like to maybe consider doing, provided that
this is doable, is to set the site back up, reinstall Wordpress on the
domain, but then, set it up in such of a way where no one under any
circumstances whatsoever could access the web site unless they had a user
name and a password. Furthermore, not only do I want them to have to login,
but I also want to bind their access to their IP address. I understand that
if they have a dynamic IP and it changes, they'd get blacklisted. I'm
totally 100% aware of that. that is something however I'm very much willing
to risk. I basically want to make this totally 100% a monthly paid
subscription service. the reason I want to bind things to people's IP's is
because, you darn well know that people're gonna try cheating the system and
giving out their login to other people telling them, here, use it, and keep
your mouth shut. I'm not about to let myself get cheated in this manor.
Gordon, I know you and Lynn who moderate this list run servers as well, such
as the one hosting this listserv. I'd even possibly be willing to pay you
all monthly for hosting and that extra incryption if you think you all could
set me something up. We'd have to talk about that off list though. If the
privacy cannot be set through a Wordpress plugin, or through the .htaccess
file to do this, and, if in addition, I can't tie those accounts to certain
IP addresses, whether that be through a web based control panel, through a
firewall of some type, or through an SQL database that can be managed
through a web interface, I will not be taking on this project. I'm sorry,
but the stuff that I will be putting up is my own copy written work, and
frankly, I'm not about to let it leak into the wrong people's hands.
If there is any way to do this, and you all can tell me how to make it
happen, I'll get started, as I don't really have anything else to do today.
Otherwise, it's not gonna be happening.
Chris.
