The more I use this phone the more subtle differences I note between the
new Galaxy S8 and the older Galaxy S6 I had so I'll note these as I find
them for everyone's reference.
Those who have read anything about the Samsung Galaxy S8 will know that
it has a fingerprint reader on the rear of the phone, not a huge problem
and I prefer it out of the way of the big screen to be honest.
What I have noticed is that one doesn't have to press the power key to
start the unlock process any longer - with the older Galaxy S6 one had
to press the home or the power key and then lay one's finger on the home
key to have the finterprint recognised, enter a Password etc.
Now just laying your finger on the fingerprint reader is enough to bring
a Samsung Galaxy S8 from locked state back to life instantly, incredibly
convenient.
The Galaxy S8 has no physical home button but does indeed have a home
button, its in the middle of 3 buttons at the very bottom of the screen
whicn from left to right read Recents, Home and Back.
With the Samsung Galaxy S6 a simple touch of the Recents or Back button
would activate the button however all these capacitive buttons need to
be at least double-tapped before they're activated.
So how to launch the Google Assistant on a Galaxy S8 then? Double-tap
and hold the Home button and the Google Voice Assistant screen pops up.
Obviously with the changes to the "Home" button come other changes and
the most obvious of these is with Voice Assist or Talkgack, no
triple-click to enable or disable rather pressing of the volume up and
power buttons together.
Previously with the S6 one could set the "Home" button to answer
incoming calls, this feature has naturally disappeared with the S8, to
answer calls now press the volume up key.
For those who want that little extra volume then the S8 certainly has
that. I did think the speaker of the S8 was slightly more muffled than
that of the S6 but now I'm not so sure, perhaps I'm getting used to the
way the S8 sounds?
