What the blazes are you wittering on about here? What’s this nonsense about can’t read what it’s showing? You’re twisting what I am saying I think. The ElBraille uses a screen-reader as its interface, just as any other Windows computer or, for that matter, any computer does. Thus, if you can use your screen-reader, once you get used to the new way of doing things, as I now have, it’s a very nice divide to use actually.
And I must say also that my worries regarding it being a 32-bit device have proven to be unfounded. I’ve now got the thing doing all kinds of different applications. It runs RadioBOSS, Station Playlist Creator Pro, SAM Broadcaster, (although obviously not all at the same time), just so that aspect of my message isn’t misunderstood. I’ve discovered, I think, what my problem with spurious symbols was being caused by. And yes, I freely admit that the blame for that one lies at my own doorstep. I obviously hadn’t taken as much care as I thought I had when I configured JAWS. I can also confirm that the ElBraille is quite happy to run NVDA, Supernova and System Access Stand-alone. So it isn’t essential to have JAWS loaded, it’s just their way of selling the product I guess. Obviously, with different screen-readers, the command set changes. But once you get used to which keystroke causes what to happen, it’s quite easy to adapt that to which ever screen-reader you’re running at the time. When I get around to it, I will now be able to configure Outlook to my liking. Although I may still opt to run Thunderbird. I’ve done word processing using Office 2016 (365) and print spooling to my HP OfficeJet printer. I installed OpenBook last night, with the specific intention of connecting my Pearl camera to it, that would really give me a portable scanning solution of high quality. Only problem is that I’ve lost my bloody authorisation CD and OpenBook program CD at some point in the not too distant past. So until I find that it’s a bit of a bind using demo mode. I will also install KNFB Reader, although that will obviously require me to set up my Epson Printer/scanner/copier which is a networked device, so that should be fun. The SD card reader on the ElBraille is high capacity (SD-XC compatible), so that’s good news. Anyway, in response to your message, I would say just this. Don’t condemn out of hand before you’ve tried the thing for yourself. By the way. I had an update from my informer on Friday regarding availability of the new fifth generation Freedom devices. The Focus 40 Blue, fifth generation, is shipping now. There will be stop in the UK and other countries within the next fortnight. The ElBraille 40, more on that in a moment, is scheduled to begin shipping at the end of September. Now, the ElBraille 40 comes in 3 different units. Firstly, the dock station for the 4th generation Focus. Secondly the dock station for the Focus 40 Blue 5th Generation, and lastly the ElBraille W40 which is the all-in-one device, whose Braille display is hard wired into the dock. In the case of the latter device, it will be running with a very high capacity battery, 14 AmpHour, as I understand it. The Focus element will also have the same battery as the external unit so that the ElBraille part of the device can be shut down so that the Focus can be used in the same way as the current models can be used. The only thing you need to remember about that divide is that it isn’t as portable, due to its overall size, which doesn’t appeal to me personally. So what I’m going to do is go for a new 5th generation Focus 40 Blue, and also a dock statin for the existing Focus 40 Blue. More expensive, you might say. No, not really. As I understand it, the ElBraille W40 will retail for just over £4000.00 but the dock station is significantly cheaper. The ElBraille 40 Dock Station will sell for about £1200.00 I believe, and the 5th generation Focus will retail at just a little more than the current model does. So it will work out cheaper to do it that way if, that is, I decide to do this at all. Me being me, I will continue to watch this thread develop with Freedom and may yet change my mind as new data become available. Anyway, in summary, the definition of the ElBraille 14 as the “Twenty-First Century, Take-Anywhere replacement for the dedicated note taker” is absolutely spot-on. You have access to most all of your favourite applications as you have on your PC. It seems that I need to qualify every comment I make at the moment, so that some people don’t twist my words. So, I shall do that now. I still believe that the approach of having an Android device from main stream technologies, or an iOS device if that is your preference, has a lot of merit. That approach brings some very obvious advantages. And I certainly have no plans to ditch my Android devices, quite the contrary. But having both angles covered gives you the best of both worlds. ================================================= My compliments and kindest regards Gordon Smith: <[email protected]> Accessibility & Information Technology Support Specialist..
