Agreed, if the chip has FM support why not enable it. Yes, many far better FM radios are about but, if you can only afford a phone as your main form of communications.
Many Android phones have the chip and it takes a free app to enable this service. I think it is greed for Apple to disable this chip, as the article states you have to download music, use mobile data for news and purchase apps for the same services. 73 from IC From: Travis Siegel [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, October 3, 2017 3:53 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [Techno-Chat]: FCC asks Apple to activate the iPhone's hidden FM radio to aid public safety - The Verge See, this is the kind of thing that makes no sense to me. Why should I have to purchase anything extra when the hardware already supports the function. I have no idea why apple has refused to enable the fm radio capabilities on the iPhones, and I can't figure out why folks think it's a good idea to buy an extra piece of hardware to accomplish the task. Apple did the same thing with the earphone jak, claiming it's old technology, but what it really is (for them at least) is more harware sales, because now if you want to use headphones on the new iPhos, you need to purchase another component to make it happen. This is just stupid, and doesn't make any sense, and doesn't do anybody any favors. The fm radio falls in the same category. It's stupid not to enable it, it doesn't affect anything, and so what if it doesn't work as well as a stand-alone radio, it still works, and could easily be used as a selling point, like a lot of the android devices do. I liked the fact that my android tablet had fm capabilities, and used it a lot. You can't use that capability on IOS unless you jailbreak the phone, and that is (once again) just stupid. So the older phones have capabilities for FM radios? Up until now taken any talk of that with a grain of salt given just how much other rubbish we hear about iPhone these days. As for a phone not having a FM radio being a critical point? I’m not sure I go along with that. FM radio sets are so good and cheap these days so why not just go out and buy one, at a fraction of the cost of a new iPhone and surely - anyone preparing an emergency kit whilst travelling - would have some sort of radio on hand though I’m not sure I’d pick just a FM set, possibly something with multi bands such as a cheap and reliable World Band radio which can be held in the hand. I can assure you that carrying one of these would be well worth it given the FM radios in phones - given my experience - just don’t perform too well, yep for local stuff there okay but - if disaster strikes - you may need something better than that. Anyway its an interesting discussion and the whole idea of FM radios in phones hasn’t been abandoned, take the Nokia 3310 and the other Nokia Android phones which are around now, I believe they all have FM radio facilities. Further to this - if you believe it absolutely critical that your iPhone have a FM radio - then a dock connector can be purchased to carry out this task. ********** “For the gardener nothing is more handier than bombs, I mean the 1’s you put in the ground and not the electric light 1’s.” On 2 Oct 2017, at 9:48 am, Iaen Cordell <[email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> > wrote: https://www.theverge.com/2017/9/28/16379316/fcc-iphone-fm-radio-activation-r equest-ajit-pai ------------------------------ This post, like all posts to the Techno Chat E-Mail group has been scanned by our server-side antivirus/malware solution.
