Thanks rick as you encouraged me to do some further digging.
Okay for Mac users you can still download “Classic Skype” which functions as it 
always has thus you don’t have to use the new Skype, well not for now at any 
rate.
I’m working on the Mac right now so I’ve not had a chance to try Skype For 
Desktop on any Windows machines yet.
So the question is why my machines - both Windows and Mac - updated to the 
latest versions for their respective operating systems?
Perhaps I pressed the “Try new Skype” button along the way somewhere? Well I 
don’t recall but I’m not here to dwell on recollection, I’m just very glad 
there’s a fix to the issues, whether or not I’ll resume my Skype services I’m 
not sure of at this time but regardless of that people can easily communicate 
with me via Skype still if they choose to.
