I read articles on a frequent basis predicting the demise of the AM or Medium-Wave band, I find myself chuckling whenever I read articles and statements containing such predictions. You only have to look in most Australian cities to discover that AM stations - particularly talk stations - rate very well. In the US the AM band is packed with well rating stations, in LA for example KFI on 640 AM does very well along with the all news station KNX on 1070. Both those stations do broadcast in digital - HD Radio being the digital standard in the states - but the majority of people still listen with their trusty AM tranny. Since I mentioned these two stations and since I know there are several people who enjoy long distance radio listening, have you tried listening to these 2 LA stations from Hawaii? Believe it or not you can and I can prove this to you very easily. Go To the Kiwi Software Radio page at http://www.sdr.hu <http://www.sdr.hu/> and search for the SDR in Hawaii, click the link and enter 1070KHZ say for KNX LA into the frequency edit box, you’ll be absolutely amazed. Of course you have to work out the right listening time so night time LA time would be the best bet, Hawaii is 2 hours behind LA time.
