But as I grow older and my vision fades it may be a good idea to visit the "freak store" at a local mall and purchase a fluorescent blacklight if I can find one. Last time I checked it was 2004. (They used to use it for some posters they had around.) So I asked if he ever used it for inspections, and he didn't know what I was talking about. I picked up the light and a chassis and said come on, headed for the bathroom. He says, I'm not going in there with you. A little discussion insued, but in we went. Turned off the lights, and I showed him what we were looking at. We came out of the bathroom, and there stood on of the receptionists... Anyway, for starting out you need all the help you can get. Get a clean board, wash a small section with acetone. Check for some good smooth solder connections so you know were they are. Next, get a wire or something that you can wiggle while you solder, and solder it to the board, making sure that the wire is wiggling while the solder cools, you Want a bad connection, maybe wrinkes or a satiny look. Now, get in a dark area and look at the "good" connections and the "bad" connections. The good connections will be a dark purple dot, nice and smooth, the others will not be. They will have little lines in them. Cracks also show as lines. Once you learn what the good connections look like it is easy to spot the bad ones and the cracks.
