Take and carefully remove your old can type filter from the chassis.
With a hacksaw, CAREFULLY! cut around the base of the filter can, just
above the crimp line.
Pull off the top of the filter can and cut the attachments to the base.
Smooth off any rough edges on the aluminum where you cut off the top.
Clean off the base and drill a small hole right next to where each lug
protrudes from the base. These holes are to run the + wires from
separate
filter caps through. I find a Dremel (tm) type tool works best for this.
Also drill one more hole in a convenient place to run the negative lead
through.
Insert your filter caps positive leads through the appropriate holes
next to
the proper lug, and bend around/ through the lug.
Insert your separate filters and solder one common wire to the negative
lead
and run it through the hole and solder it to one of the ground lugs
AFTER
the filter can has been reattached to the chassis.
Run the appropriate wires & components back to their original lugs and
solder.
Before reinstalling the "can" I like to run a wire tie around the
individual
caps, and then further secure them together and to the base with some
clear RTV aquarium sealant. (Doesn't hurt the components like other types of
RTV may).
This method has the benefit of allowing you to clean out the old can
part
and cover over the new caps with it if there is room, besides letting
you
keep the markings the same for reattaching the components to the proper
place when installed.
Basically the same can be done to make up the filters in the AC/DC
radios,
that are in the wax cardboard tubes too.
