I don't think so. This is something the cable companies have been pushing the FCC for.
I'm not sure about smaller sets...but cable companies like the idea of the cable card 
and it is to be an
industry standard between manufacturers and "major" cable companies.

Not too surprising since I have been trying to repair a Hitachi with a built
in Direct TV receiver.

The addition of a cable converter is a logical next step, but I forsee some
problems in compatability between different cable companies, as there are
several types of decoder schemes.
