Those output transistors on the 187 do tend to run hot from my experience.
Leave it on and play it for a few days before returning it to the customer
just to make sure. So long as the heatsink doesn't "sizzle" spit on the end
of your finger then the temperature of the heatsink is probably OK.

Subject: [Techs] CTC187CL3 hot getting too warm

Hello Techs,
Working on a RCA Ctc187CL3 which came in dead.FBT was
bad
Changed it and the HOT after checking all the
electrolytics in the horizontal section along with the
diodes, the driver transistor and transformer and some
resistors.Set came on and worked well for about 10
minutes then HOT went again.I had used a cheaper
generic so I stopped looking at the pennies and
replaced it with a genuine RCA
replacement(#223942)This time I let it run for about
five minutes, turned it off and checked the HOT it had
gotten so hot that even though I could touch it I
could not leave my finger on it.Is there anything that
I am overlooking here?Need some help with this
one.T.I.A.
