You can get an adapter which will allow the laptop hard drive to fit with a standard desk top hard drive IDE cable. Try to format the hard drive in a desktop system. Maybe make the first partition only 7 gb to see if that helps.

I replaced the hard drive as the old one had a bad bearing. I installed a Hitachi 30.0 gb drive I purchased from Gateway. When attempting to install Windows from the OEM software, the drive size is not reported correctly (shows only 7gb undefined) and the drive will not partition. I tried using my old Win98se disc to see what would happen and same thing. Bios reports drive space correctly. Both operating systems simply refuse to create an active partition. Fdisk tells me the partition is not defined even after selecting the option to set up a primary drive and restarting the computer when done. Drive integrity reports ok.

I get the following error if I try to boot from the drive (of course there is nothing on it): PXE-E61: media test failure, check cable.

the connection between the hard drive and it's socket appears ok. I soldered the connector, which is attached to the mainboard and no change.

Any ideas? I sent a copy of the above to Gateway and after one week of passing email back and forth they want me to send it in to them, which is not an option with the customer.
