Google offer to bring free Wi-Fi to Mountain View

The San Jose Mercury News reports that Google has offered to provide free Wi-Fi service to Mountain View, California, where it is headquartered. Tropos is supplying the equipment (mesh nodes) for the network.

Mountain View is located south of San Francisco (30 minutes drive) and is home to many tech companies. Mountain View has not (to my knowledge) issued an RFP so the Google offer comes as a surprise. Google was one of the respondents to the San Francisco RFI to bring free citywide Wi-Fi service. San Francisco has now decided to issue an RFP.
