Matt,

We're actually running without the power supply grounded at most sites, but it doesn't matter for the equipment smoking issue because the Compact has DC+ connected to it's chassis ground. You can verify this by measuring for voltage or resistance between the negative terminal on your power supply and the ground lug or mounting bracked on your Compact. If you have a +48 device on the tower which also has a chassis ground connected to DC then it won't matter whether or not you have a ground at the bottom.....you'll have a short through the tower and either blow a fuse or smoke something.

What should be safe in that mixed DC environment, in my opinion, is an isolated 48v to 48v converter such as a Meanwell RSD-200C-48 or equivalent. You put it between your rectifier and the Compact power cable.

Good luck out there,
Adam

Subject: [Telrad] Neg 48 on BreezeCompact 1000

I have a BreezeCompact 1000 powered up on the bench. I read the installation manual and I do see it is advised to connect “+ Output to Site Ground” per page 24 of the manual. I have mixed equipment in our tower cabinet so we have a floating ground - neither a negative or a positive is bonded to the cabinet/chassis ground. I will burn up other equipment if I positively ground the + output from our rectifier. Is anyone else running Telrad in production with a floating ground?
