That's one way to do it, however given that FOP is Java based, you could
also create a SOAP (or XML-RPC) wrapper for it and call it using SOAP.

I am guessing that would slow it down more than a TT plugin using command line but still worth thinking about to see what advantages this might give.

(ps: using fop or latex strikes me as being slow in computing terms

Latex isn't too bad, say 2 or 3 times slower than the equivalent web page but still slower than I would like. If the XML method was slower we probably would not be able to do it unless something simple like throwing more ram at it brought it to equivalent speed. If the XML FOP route is the same speed it is worth considering for us because of the speed at which we develop we need as much self checking and robustness as possible and XML seems good at that (we use XML elsewhere in our systems), it also seems flexible and easy for future development (a bit like the difference between working in a low level language versus an OO language, speed is not always the most important thing).

I have noticed a few other perl based PDF creating methods mentioned. Anyone ever done any speed / ease of use comparisons?
